Mauritius targets 1.2 lakh Indians by 2020

With a wide-range of tourism products on offer for the Indian travellers, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), is undertaking aggressive marketing activities to attract more Indians to the island country. In line with the same, the tourism board conducted a four-city roadshow in New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Mumbai recently. The objective of the event was to acquaint the Indian travel partners with the destinations and meet the hoteliers, destination management companies and activity companies.

Arvind Bundhun the director of MTPA, said, “Mauritius is a heaven of peace besides a rich melting pot and a glamorous destination. We excel in different niche; golf, spas, hotels, gastronomy and above all, a sense of hospitality. This year, about 89,000 Indian tourists are expected to visit Mauritius.”

Vivek Anand, the Country Manager—India, MTPA, said, “We have seen a 11 per cent year-on-year growth in the Indian tourist arrivals over the last four years, taking the number to 86,000 in 2017. We are targeting 1,20,000 tourists by 2020. We expect a healthy growth in the MICE and weddings segment and will be promoting Mauritius as a destination ‘beyond-the-beach’. Many producers have also shown interest to shoot Bollywood movies in Mauritius.”

He further informed that the island country offers amazing activities for adventure lovers like sky diving, zip-lining, quad biking sea-karting, submarine rides, helicopter tours, and some once-in-a-lifetime experiences among others.

Sanjay Sondhi, the CEO of Om Tourism, which represents Mauritius in India, identified that rum and tea tasting tours are gaining popularity among tourists. Those who are inclined towards sports can enjoy a game of golf at one of the many championship level courses in the country. Indians, while in Mauritius, can partake long drives, shopping, night life, delicious cuisine or simply rejuvenate themselves at the world-class spas. “Mauritius is a perfect destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE). Besides its natural splendor, the island has all the key facilities required for organising successful events,” said Sondhi.
