Pop out of the jewel box

This wedding season, help a young couple set up a beautiful home instead. Here are a few ideas by Team Viva

Wedding gifting in India has mostly been about ceremonial grandeur or scale. If it’s not a piece of jewellery, then it has to be a fat ribbon-crusted gift cheque or an exotic vacation. Seldom do we realise that the couple intends to settle back into a normal life after the big day and could do much more with practical aids than having to think of a heirloom closet. A gift for a couple can be equally thoughtful, beautiful and no holds barred. Make sure that the gifts get out of the box and are used, touched and felt everyday.

If you do choose to gift jewellery, leave the traditional gold behind. Trust us it would only be transported to bank lockers and be taken out for other wedding soirees. Opt for a combination of coloured gems and diamonds that has a more cocktail feel. Gift a statement piece like a diamond earring with a square emerald stone or a floral design earring with a pearl and coloured stone that can be worn at any party.

If you must buy gold, opt for lighter designs that can be worn daily. Ear jackets, ear sliders, pendants, stackable bracelets, chokers and rings with coloured gems set in 18K gold make for beautiful gifts for the bride who will be the talk of the town much after the wedding day.

A young couple has to set up home  after their marriage and decorative or special kitchenware are a priority for them. Present them with a silver plated and malachite stone tea set or a silver goblet that is equal parts ceremonial and attractive. These pieces can be passed down generations and become heritage pieces as well. Or opt for a Persian plate and saucer holder along with decorative plates and saucers or a cabernet wooden beer tray with beer mugs, if you want to gift something casual.

An antique coffee bean churner or leather boxes can be great pieces for the den of the house. Imagine how thankful a coffee loving couple will be with a churner that can get them a freshly ground brew every morning. The boxes bring character with their textured feel.

If you want to focus on the groom, ceremonial buttons, cufflinks, bows, shoes or even an attire like a bandhgala will be a great personalised gift. Present him with an emerald green bow, in Italian cotton velvet, embellished with a crown figurative embroidery from a famed designer. The small piece can amp up the groom’s outfit.

Step away from the vases and miniatures if you want to gift home decor. The latest trend in wall decor comprises decorative plates and dimensional wall art like wall sculptures, 3D wall art and wall panels. Use of dimensional art gives the decor space a layered look that feels more complete. Wood carvings or even raw pieces of metal can solve the purpose of expressing your design vision. For a piece to decorate a table surface, opt for beautifully painted plates.
