Unravel the darkness

Cole Sprouse of Suite life of Zack and Cody fame has come a long way as an actor. In Riverdale, he has come into his own as a performer and how. By Team Viva

Riverdale is a thrilling drama filled with secrets, mysteries and scandals and far removed from the Archie Comics it is based on. The genre-bending show follows the story of the residents of the not-so-sleepy town of Riverdale.  While the first season unravelled the saga surrounding the tragic death of high school boy Jason Blossom, the second season dealt with the mystery of the Black Hood and the third one  is following a separate genre of its own. We catch up with Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead Jones in the show, to find out how season three will pan out.

What excites you the most about Jughead’s storyline in season three?

Jughead’s mother [played by Gina Gershon] and his sister [played by Trinity Rose Likins] are coming back into town, so that will shake up his family dynamic. For a while, Jughead was the only one without a second parent in the picture - but that’s no longer the case.

How will Jughead be a different leader to his father, FP [played by Skeet Ulrich]?

Jughead’s a tactician. He’s a cerebral leader. He doesn’t think that might is right. He was a pacifist for much for season two, and he’s going to be bringing that feeling into the Serpents; how do we rebuild without making so many enemies while simultaneously standing our ground? It’s going to be interesting.

Season two ended in a bit of a mess for the Serpents. How much danger will they face in the upcoming season?

The Serpents are in a rag-tag place. Their ranks are really depleted, so a lot of it is about recruitment and a lot of it is about building back up. For much of the season, Jughead is going to be tested as the leader of the Serpents. He’s in a much more calm and collected place now that he’s had this near-death experience, so he’s not as hot-headed anymore. That helps.

Is Jughead out for revenge?

I don’t know if revenge is part of his leadership quality. I don’t know if revenge really suits him. I think he’s going to be calm and collected and more tactical about how he approaches leadership. No, I don’t think revenge is in the picture.

How will the arrival of Jughead’s mother and sister change his role as the leader of the Serpents?

It’s going to breed some discontent between him and his leadership. He’s also got some people testing themselves against his leadership, so we’ll see where that goes, too.

What do you hope to see happen in season three?

We are still in the dark for most of it but I want to find out about Jughead’s relationship with his younger sister. I want to see what that means to him. I want to see how protective he is towards her. He will introduce her to this sh*t-show that’s going on around his life, which is going to be a really interesting and fun dynamic to play. I also want to see how the Serpents react to his family.

At the end of season two, Jughead asked Betty [played by Lili Reinhart] to be his Serpent queen. What exactly does that involve?

I have no idea. It is a bit ambiguous and we actually address that in the first episode [of season three]. We clarify exactly what that means. I think it’s more of a partnership thing. It means, “I’ve got your back, and you’ve got my back.” His unwillingness to include her in the Serpents before was an attempt to protect her, so his willingness to include her now is an attempt to say, “I feel confident about you.”

What else can fans expect to see in season three of Riverdale?

Every season seems to have a difference in genre. Season One was a murder mystery. The first part of Season Two was a horror and the second was a mafia crime drama. This season, it’s looking like a cult narrative is going to be the over-arching theme, which is going to be super-interesting.

There are rumours that there will be a supernatural element to season three.

It seems like some of the supernatural elements that [Riverdale executive producer] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] has been training his pen on for Sabrina have woven their way slightly into the show.

What do you think of the show’s soaring success?

We’re very lucky on Riverdale. We work really hard on the show. All of us do. We’re taking a property that already had a built-in fan base and we’re adding interesting people, interesting actors, interesting casting and interesting narratives to the plot and we hope that it takes off. In some way or another, as long as we do that justice, then we’re going to end up in a good place and people are going to continue to like the show.
