A majority of Sri Lankan legislators on Friday voted in favour of a parliamentary motion to halt finances to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Cabinet and junior ministers, a day after Parliament passed a motion to cut finances to the Prime Minister's office.
Amidst a severe political turmoil ongoing in the island country, the motion to cut finances to the ministries was submitted to Parliament by MP Patali Champika Ranawaka from the Jathika Hela Urumaya, a party loyal to ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Xinhua news agency reported.
The motion was passed with 122 MPs in the 225 member Parliament voting in favour whilst MPs from Rajapaksa's government boycotted parliamentary sessions for the fourth consecutive time. Rajapaksa, who was appointed the Prime Minister in the new Cabinet by President Maithripala Sirisena on October 26, earlier said that he and his party opposed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's behaviour and they would boycott sessions till such time they were recognized as the ruling party.
