‘Just a professional degree is not enough’

Wednesday, 07 August 2019 | VAIBHAV PANDE

Time is changing. Companies are now looking for employees who are job-ready from day one. VAIBHAV PANDE shares tips that need to be honed by the applicants

Times change, needs change. In this era of cut throat competition in the professional world, the rules of the games are simple. Companies do not hire marksheets, they hire professionals with great people skills. It is quintessential for a college student to work on speaking skills, creativity, thinking skills and developing emotional quotient to rise in the corporate ladder in lightning fast speed.

Students at times find them not so suitably equipped to attend college interviews and Selection drives as they do not work on these areas at the right time. The four years of professional education must not be spent on only making assignments and giving exams. There is a long list of skills which have to be honed in these valuable years.

It is imperative to know that India faces the gloomy reality that a high percentage of its college pass outs are not employable. Time and again, this issue has been raised by industry experts and academicians. Let us explore the skills required for professional success after college.

Soft skills for a successful career: Soft skills are a must for every college student. What to talk, when to talk and how to talk are three important skills which can make or break a career. A student with excellent soft skills will fare much better than a student who doesn’t work on his soft skills. Participation in public speaking events, joining college clubs, attending seminars by experts of professional skills are few ways of developing one’s soft skills in College.

Finding inner strength: When a student is in college, he thinks stress is a good thing. It makes him follow deadlines and to study hard.  Though when one enters professional life, the stress levels become gigantic and then, only people with better life skills are able to hold their nerves. Skills like time management, anger management, stress management etc. should be learnt by college student as they help in shaping the inner personality.

There are many courses of life management which are being run by organisations of global repute these days. Such courses not only help a student in finding the right balance in life, they also add up value to your CV. Companies would love to hire individuals who have worked hard for building a holistic personality. Such individuals would be able to gel better with the norms and culture of the organisation as well.

Body language and interview skills: Body Language is the science of understanding what is not spoken.

During interviews, candidates are judged on their body language and gestures. The right handshake, the right body posture can help a candidate in building the right rapport with the Interviewer. Colleges must invite body language experts for special workshops as during selection days body language can make or break a deal.

Another important aspect on which success of college students depends is whether they are trained for Interviews or not. Students work laboriously for years to clear exams and aptitude test of companies but they somehow ignore the ultimate test: The interview. Frequently asked questions, questions on one’s interests and academic scores must be practiced beforehand. It takes not more than 10 days to prepare for an interview but Students never pay attention to this important skill. There are even free tutorials available on the Internet from where one can learn the art of cracking Interviews. For learning finer aspects, the students must request the placement cell of the college to get them professional guidance.

Colleges need to focus on these areas so that our youngsters are just not employable but they also become leaders with a vision. The world awaits Indian students with excellence as a habit.
