Grab the 2nd change

Ramesh Batlish, FIITJEE expert tells aspirants how to get that perfect score

A well-conceived study plan and regular mock tests would help you streamline your preparation to progressive perfection

With NTA’s decision to conduct the JEE Main exams twice a year from 2019, many aspirants have an added advantage. The first phase of the JEE Main 2019 concluded on January 12. The students who are not sure of getting a better rank also has a second chance in April (April 6-20). Registrations have already started and will go on till March 7, 20 19.

The Common Rank List for JEE Main 2019 will be available in the first week of May after the declaration of the results of the April exam. The better of the scores of candidates who have appeared in both JEE Main January and April will be considered for the ranking purposes while the scores of the candidates who have appeared for just one exam will be used as it is. The common rank lists will denote the all India and category ranks of the candidates in addition to the details of the candidates and marks obtained. The JEE Main rank will be the basis for admissions to the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs

For those who missed out on the first attempt or want to improve their ranking to qualify for JEE Advanced, here is a better chance to revise their preparations. Attempting the first Main exam, should be considered as a mock test which is helpful in understanding the weak areas for detailed analysis and preparations.

Strengthen weak subjects

Identify the chapters whose questions were difficult to solve. Consult teachers and faculty for clearing doubts. This not only helps in clearing the weak concepts, but also helps in managing the time in all aspects for better outcomes. Allocate adequate time to each subject such that due attention is paid to each topic. Allocate extra hours every week for the difficult subjects and doubt clearing sessions. Discipline is the key to follow the time table. Keep one hour in a week for self analysis and correction. A well-conceived study plan and regular mock tests would help you streamline your preparation to progressive perfection.

Utilise the time gap

Board exams and the second attempt to JEE Main being closely scheduled, preparations for both these needs to be planned meticulously. However, the challenge remains about how to focus and go about it to emerge victorious in both the exams. This is the phase when you must not only focus on scoring good marks, but also perfect the art of simultaneous preparation for two major exams of your life — Boards and JEE Main.

There are certain sub-topics in various subjects which generally get more weightage in the Boards because the questions are subjective type. There are also some topics which are part of JEE Main but not part of the JEE Advanced exam which some students tend to ignore during their preparation. For example, in physics the chapters on electronic devices and communications systems are part of JEE Main and the Board exam but not part of the JEE Advanced Exam. Students should carefully study these chapters along with the questions from the sample papers so that they can comfortably handle descriptive questions from these chapters.

Practice

Though good number of problem solving is essential but having it done with the concept clarity accelerates success as the exam may not have a fixed pattern. Though it is good to solve questions,  but focus more on making the concepts transparent.

Cracking JEE requires great strength and hold in analytical skills with a great emphasis on critical thinking. It is thus imperative to understand the application of the concept as well.

What to do

  • Solve at least 50-60 numerical questions per day — all subjects:  Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
  • Set time limits for each question — improve your speed while solving problems
  • Start with the challenging areas first — prepare brief notes on the hardest sections.
  • Categorise your time table — give a proper time to those topics which you have missed in the first attempt of JEE Main (January 19). Work on your weaker areas effectively and efficiently.
  • Prioritise by topic — develop your strategy to prioritise your subjects in accordance to your requirements.
  • Analyse your mistakes and improve upon them — find out the points that you often face difficulty with and which slow you down. Seek help from Teachers on these points.
  • Never quit until you have achieved your daily target — once you have solved your daily problems, make tomorrow's plan.
  • Practice logical thinking, analytical skills and increase your mental ability — build your solutions step-by-step with conceptual thinking. Remove stray thoughts and increase your mental strength.
  • Don't give up. Until the exam ends — keep up your routine and resolve to keep trying.
  • Use your board exam syllabus — material from the board exams will be included on both JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
  • Consult test papers from previous years — obtain copies of test papers from the past 10-15 years and solve the questions.
  • Take care on your health — do not compromise with your health, have proper food on time and relax. Keep yourself comfortable all the time.
  • Discard your stress on the results before the exam — don't be exhausted by thinking the results before attempting the paper. Stay positive with high morale and imagine yourself as a winner.
  • Stay in touch with your teachers/mentor — always be in touch with your all teachers, do discuss your queries/problems with them, get exam cracking mantra and tips from them.
  • Give yourself proper sleep time — Have a sound sleep for at least seven to eight hours daily and wake up with a fresh mood and positive attitude.
