Landslide Mitigation Training

The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) conducted a five-day training programme on Landslide Mitigation and Detailed Project Report Preparation. The training aimed at creating awareness about the potential hazards and the various risk mitigation measures for landslides by explaining the fundamental concepts of slope stability.

International expert, Prof Vikas Thakur, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway conducted informative sessions. Emphasizing on the necessity to reduce losses whether to human by enforcing early warning systems in the country, he said: “Landslide hazards are mostly unavoidable; landslide disasters are not.”

Publication expansion plan

The Notion Press, announces its entry into Indian language publishing by building support for as many as eight major regional languages. Apart from English, the platform now supports books in Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Indian writers can soon publish their stories in their preferred vernacular in both paperback and eBook.

Speaking at the launch, Naveen Valsakumar, CEO of Notion Press said: “There is a growing demand for quality publishing in India. Xpress publishing is the solution for aspiring authors who don’t get their work published because they don’t have access to quality publishing.”

PFS, MDI enter into partnership

The MDI, Gurgaon and PFS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate for leveraging their strengths in developing capacities in the areas of infrastructure, especially sustainable infrastructure financing.

The agreement was signed by Naveen Kumar, Director (Operations), PFS and Prof (Dr) Atmanand, Director (Additional Charge) MDI, Gurgaon.

Prof (Dr.) Atmanand said: “The MoU will create synergy between academics and financing institution for infrastructure evaluation and finance, climate financing, clean development mechanisms and energy efficiency. The focus would be more on developing training and capability building towards achieving green and clean environment. It will help in developing financial modelling to be used by financing institutions.”

Conference at JGU

The Vice-chairman, University Grants Commission, Dr Bhushan Patwardhan has stressed the need for acknowledging recognising and encouraging the efforts of private sector in the field of higher education.

In his keynote address at the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Conference on Higher Education organised by the OP Jindal Global University (JGU) at Sonipat, he observed that one must not see whether an institution is public or a private one but whether it is being run on a not for profit basis. Referring to the silent revolution in the field of higher education led by the private institutions including the emergence of new centres of excellence, Dr Patwardhan emphasised that India needs more such efforts. The VC called for one semester community field work for students, creation of a national academic credit bank and monitoring of research to maintain quality.

The Lovely Professional University (LPU) has signed an MoU with the Governor’s Office in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to design IT curriculum for schools in Mongolia as well as offer training to teachers and staff.

The LPU will also provide access to quality higher education to the students from Mongolia Engineering, Management, Computer application, Pharmacy and others by offering them admissions at its campus. Students admitted GOU, Mongolia will also be awarded scholarships by the university.
