Photography is one career that may click well for you, says DIVYA CHOUDHARY

There is an instant urge to use our mobile cameras the moment we see something picturesque.  By the look of it, everyone is a photographer these days, but photography is a serious business.

Gone are the days, when photographers were the ones whom you would spot only at weddings or special occasions. The boom in e-commerce, social media and people's desire to make an impact on this platform to influence buyers or create personal branding have made photography a lucrative career option. Not only the sphere of practice in photography has increased multifold but it is also a flexible career option, which can be practiced as per one’s convenience to make extra money and many times big money. In today’s era of blogging and online shopping, photography has become an important component that influences the buyer to make a purchase.

Eligibility: Photography is both a science and an art. Understanding of the lens and the lighting proposition, a person from any discipline can learn photography. An aspirant can learn photography with either a full time or a part-time course. The course duration may vary from 11 months to two years. Candidates who have cleared the Class XII exam are eligible for the diploma/certificate courses in photography.

Average salary: Photography has a category of employment. The first is self-employment and the other is permanent employment. Most of the photographers are self-employed. A project may vary from one-hour job to a full day job or contracts.  An average photographer may earn `5,000-`5,00,000 or more for a project, depending on the scope of work, experience and the expertise of a photographer.

Scope of work: There is an immense scope of work, which is limitless. A good photographer can take up international assignments. Some of the notable scopes of work for today’s photographers are as follows:

  • Commercial photography:  Such photographers take pictures of merchandise, Exterior and interior spaces, hotels, the machinery of factories, products of manufactures for the brochures.
  • Wedding photography: Wedding photography is a very popular and highly lucrative option to earn good money. With the booming wedding business in India, the pre-wedding shoots and weddings shoots get good business opportunities.
  • Event documentation: These days people and companies like to document their events to post it on social media. Event documentation is a regular source of business.
  • Advertising & Fashion photography: This is one of the best-paid sectors. Success in this stream depends on ability, efficiency and personality.

If you are adventurous, gregarious, disciplined, curious and have an eye for details photography can be a good career option for you.
