Micromax co-founder ‘electrifies’ two-wheeler industry

Wednesday, 19 June 2019 | PNS | New Delhi

Revolt Motors wants to revolutionise the two-wheeler industry, the company established by Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma showcased their new RV400 product today. Sharma, however was very frank about the issues faced by the industry, including a lack of parking in front of the house and battery and range issues. However, he said that Revolt would address all those issues, the RV400 will have a removable battery that can be charged from any 15 ampere home point, and on full-charge has a certified range of over 150 kilometers. In case riders run short of range they can go to a Revolt point and either swap the battery or even have a new battery home-delivered, these steps Sharma said should aid in removing the range anxiety that electric vehicle owners rightly have.

Sharma said that the RV400 would be open for pre-bookings from June 25 on the Amazon and Revolt Motors sites for Rs 1000. However, he did not disclose any pricing details. But it appears that he is emulating the model practiced by Micromax in the past, which was to import Chinese products with some localisation and slap an Indian brand on them as the RV400 is a rebadged Super SOCO 1200 made by Chinese manufacturer SOCO. The Chinese product costs around $3300, which should translate to a price of Rs 2.5 lakh in India, but company sources said that the batteries would be sold under a ‘plan’ where users would ‘subscribe’ to the plan. Given that batteries are the single-largest cost of an electric vehicle, this should mitigate the initial cost, but even if Revolt is aiming at richer users, the market could be very limited. Unlike other similar players like Bengaluru-based Ather Energy, Revolt is going with a nationwide launch in seven cities initially — NCR, Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Ahmedabad and Chennai within the next four months.
