Diggy-Singhar spat referred to Cong disciplinary panel

Monday, 09 September 2019 | PNS | New Delhi/Bhopal

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has referred the issue of public spat involving veteran leader Digvijaya Singh and Umang Singhar, a Madhya Pradesh Minister to the party’s Central disciplinary committee after Chief Minister Kamal Nath met the party chief in the national Capital. Nath said that entire State related party issue was discussed with the party chief and that she said she was disturbed and the matter will be resolved soon.

While the Congress’ disciplinary committee chairman AK Antony is expected to come up with his report on the matter in few days, Congress general secretary in-charge of the State Deepak Babariya on Friday already submitted his report to Sonia Gandhi over the infighting in the party’s State unit and the unsavoury remarks made by partymen in public.

Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Umang Singhar, said to be close to senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, recently made some critical statements against Digvijaya Singh and accused him of running the Nath Government from behind the curtains.

He also called Singh a blackmailer and a mafia of liquor industry and mining and has written with documented evidence to Sonia Gandhi and apprised her about "unnecessary" intervention in the working of Kamal Nath government.

On his part Digvijay Singh now in Rajya Sabha too met Sonia Gandhi few days earlier and complained to her about the infighting and disregard to him by the leaders of State.

Asked whether action would be taken against Singhar, the party leader said it depends on how Antony views the feud and draws a conclusion. Singh earlier linked Singhar's remarks to his allegations associating BJP and Bajrang Dal leaders with Pakistan's spy agency ISI and that the issue has been raised with Sonia Gandhi who will take a call.

Top leaders of the Madhya Pradesh Congress have of late been going public against each other. There is also a tussle over the post of party president in the state.

Kamal Nath holds the post of the state unit president, which senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia is keen to wrest.

Scindia earlier lost the chief ministerial race to Nath narrowly when the Congress came to power in the state in December last year after 15 years and in recent times has indicated his desire to become the MP Congress chief.
