The Income Tax Department officials have seized Rs 15.5 crore of unaccounted cash from various places in Mumbai since the declaration of Model Code of Conduct for the Maharashtra Assembly polls by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on September 21.

“We have increased the strength of the Quick Response Teams, formed for this period, with additional manpower so as to ensure elections free from influence of cash and/or valuables,” a senior IT department official said.

“We will give special attention to the movement of unaccounted cash/valuables and also prohibition of distribution of cash/ valuables meant for wooing the electorate, particularly during the period when election campaign ceases on 19th October till the date of polling — October 21,” the official said.

Set up to curb the use of black money and cash inducement in the ongoing Assembly Elections in the State, the Directorate General of Income Tax (Investigation)  has since September 21 been  working in close coordination with several law enforcement agencies and other Government departments, in order to contribute to the conduct of free, fair and smooth elections.
