Mamata Banerjee has once again cried out against possible implementation of National Register of Citizens asking the people of North Bengal to “unite against the NRC wallas” by taking lessons from what happened in Assam.
Addressing a meeting at Siliguri the Bengal Chief Minister said “like in Assam where they have thrown out, 4 lakh Muslims, one lakh Nepali besides, lakhs of Biharis and other North Indians and 11 lakh Bengali Hindus out of which a sizeable number of Rajbangshis and Kamptapuris they (the BJP Govermment) are planning to make you foreigners in your own country by invoking NRC,” and asked the people of North Bengal to “unite against their nefarious designs.”
Rajbangshis and Kamptapuris account for a large number of people in seven districts of North Bengal.
“They have decided to bring in Citizenship Amendment Bill after which they will invoke NRC and render you a foreigner in your own country for six years after which they will decide whether to give you citizenship or not. As long as I am there I will never let that happen. So rest assured that there will be no NRC happening in Bengal,” Banerjee who is presently touring North Bengal said. Wondering as to “what kind of system it is where farmers, workers, Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, tribal people and those from various languages who have been living in this country for ages will be thrown out in one go,” she said “in our country everyone is a citizen and no one has any right to take away that citizenship right.”
