They paint me as dracula, says Mamata

Friday, 14 June 2019 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

Bengal Chief Minister on Thursday called upon the civil society and all the like-minded parties including the Left to form a joint front and defeat the BJP which had spent thousands of crores to disseminate fake reports in the social media to win the elections.

Fake and denigrating stories as dirty as the one’s “painting me as a blood-sucking Dracula,” the Chief Minister said. In this regard the Chief Minister also said that she had particularly spoken to the Congress leadership to jointly set up a fact-finding team to inquire into the allegations of EVM manipulation that brought BJP home with thumping majority.

While speaking to a Bangla news channel the Chief Minister said a large amount of the Rs 27,000 crore spent by the BJP during the elections went into managing, tampering EVMs and “spreading canards about me that I am a Dracula who sucks blood of the Hindus.”

By doing so the BJP is trying to make Bengal a Gujarat where the BJP was running dictatorship. “They torture the poor farmers and do not allow FIRs to be lodged,” she said adding no BJP-run State was living in peace. But “I will not allow Bengal to be hijacked by Gujarat and I will not allow that obscurantist ideology cripple the Bengal society and polity, which is why I want the Left to join hands with us.”

Not only the Congress the Chief Minister whose party has come down from 34 seats to 22 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections said she respected the political personalities like Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and “I hope the Leftists would follow his view and back the Trinamool instead of going to the BJP.”

Stopping short of referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi she said “India has seen a number of Prime Ministers from Nehru to Indira Gandhi to Narsimha Rao to Deve Gowda ji to IK Gujral but none like this regime. We want the good old days back.”

Referring to how in UP the Yadavs were being killed by the BJP men without any administrative step being taken against the assailants. “The other day I was speaking to Priyanka (Gandhi) and she informed me how 25 Yadavs were killed in UP with no action being taken,” Banerjee said adding the journalists were also not being spared in that State.

Referring to how for each Lok Sabha seat the BJP spent Rs 45 crore the Chief Minister said “cash was transported in vehicles owned by religious organisations and even the vehicles carrying the CRPF, CISF and other central forces,” adding all these cash went in to influence the voters.

In an apparent reference to former Kolkata Commissioner of Police Rajiv Kumar she said the person who was catching the influx of that “bad money” was intentionally transferred out of Bengal. The manipulation was done in such a manner that the BJP’s almost matched its pre-election predictions. “They manipulated 300 seats and they won them, they manipulated 18 seats in Bengal and they won it here,” she said.
