Curfew continues on Day 2

Tension prevailed in Jammu for the second consecutive day as district authorities decided against relaxing curfew restrictions following fresh unrest in parts of Jammu.  Mobile internet services remained disrupted while normal life was hit hard in the entire region.

Army columns remained deployed in sensitive areas of the city even as small groups of protesters took out marches holding tricolor in their hands and shouted anti-Pakistan slogans.

Tension prevailed in Janipur area where large numbers of State Government employees were accommodated inside Government quarters.  

According to reports, a small group of miscreants converged outside the Government apartments after pro-Pakistan slogans were raised by inhabitants living in the Government quarters. Senior district officers along with police officers visited the area to contain the law and order situation.

Addressing a Press conference here in Police control room, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjiv Verma claimed the issue was sorted out after the timely intervention of the senior officers.

He said all the State Government employees, who feared backlash, were directed to stay put inside their rooms and adequate security arrangements were made to instil sense of security among them.

Meanwhile, State Governor Satya Pal Malik convened a high level meeting at the Raj Bhavan where he reviewed the present law and order situation in the State in the aftermath of a major attack on a CRPF convoy at Lethpora in Pulwama district on Thursday.

The Governor directed the police to take strict action without mercy against those indulging in any type of violence, arson or rumour-mongering irrespective of political and religious affiliation, said an official spokesman. 

He said the Governor reviewed the situation of students from Jammu and Kashmir State in various Universities and Colleges across the country.

He was informed that the Liaison Officers appointed at all major locations were working effectively and coordinating with the university authorities and local police ensuring the safety of our students.

 The Governor was informed that the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu held the Peace Committee meeting in Jammu on Friday.

In the meeting, all parties universally condemned the unfortunate incidents in Jammu city and agreed to restrain their supporters from indulging in any unlawful behaviour.

The Governor directed Divisional Commissioner, Jammu to hold another Peace Committee meeting to maintain peace and harmony.

The Governor appealed to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony so that the forces trying to disrupt the peaceful environs for their petty interests are defeated.
