SP, BSP give final shape to UP alliance

Saturday, 05 January 2019 | PNS | New Delhi

BSP supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav are understood to have given final shape to the Uttar Pradesh mahagathbhandan in Delhi on Friday night in highly “secret” meeting, keeping the Congress out of the alliance. The two leaders held a three-hour meeting at Mayawati’s residence.

TV channel News 18 quoted sources close to developments saying the two parties have decided to contest 37 seats leaving six for the other parties, including the Congress.

Of the six remaining seats, the BSP and the SP have decided to leave the Congress two seats — Rae Bareli and Amethi — from where Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi contest respectively. The Congress had won only these two seats in the 2014 general elections.

Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) is likely to be allotted two seats. While Singh is likely to contest from his stronghold Baghpat, his son Jayant Choudhary will once again contest from Mathura.

The two remaining seats have been kept aside for sulking BJP ally Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party.
