2 snatched from death jaws, 7 die in avalanche

Two Special Police Officers (SPOs) were rescued alive on Friday while bodies of seven others, including members of the dog squad, firemen and head constable of J&K Police, were pulled out of the debris of a police post hit by an avalanche near the Jawahar tunnel in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Srinagar-Jammu highway late on Thursday evening.

Braving adverse weather conditions, the rescue teams had launched search operations late in the evening but could not succeed. Later on when the weather conditions improved, men and machinery were again pressed into service early on Friday morning which resulted in rescue of two SPOs from the spot.

As search operations continued, rescue workers, comprising men from the Army, State police and SDRF, stumbled upon bodies of seven others buried under the snow. Sniffer dogs of the Indian Army were pressed into service to track down the presence of any buried policemen.

According to police, ten people, including six policemen, two members of fire and emergency services and two prisoners, had gone missing late on Thursday after avalanche hit the police post.

Rescued policemen have been identified as Special Police Officers (SPOs) Gulzar Ahmad and Khalil Ahmad of the dog squad.

Meanwhile, bodies of Head Constable Muzaffar, Constable Arshad Gul, Constable Shabnam of the Dog Squad, firemen Fayaz Ahmad Parray and Head Constable Firdous Ahmad (Driver, Fire services) were recovered by the rescue teams. Bodies of Vikram Singh, S/O Kulvinder Singh R/O  Udhampur, and Daljeet Singh S/O Hari Singh, R/O  Gurdaspur, Punjab were recovered from the avalanche site.

Meanwhile, routine life was hit hard by the heaviest snowfall of the season across Kashmir valley. More than 350 students were airlifted in two IL-76 sorties on the directions of State Governor SP Malik on Friday to ensure they appeared in their annual GATE/AIEEE examinations.
