‘I like my job to be uncomfortable’

‘I like my job to be uncomfortable’

After gaining popularity for playing Rishi in the digital space, KARAN V GROVER is  back on TV with Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum on Star Plus. He speaks with MUSKAN BAKSHI about the show and journey thus far

What is your character about ?

I play Rohit Sippy, a cardiac surgeon. His perception about actors and the industry is that it is a very non-sensible field. He doesn’t like actors and the way industry works. For him, it’s a waste of time. But, it changes when he met Sonakshi Rastogi, an actor (played by Deepika Kakar) and get to know the amount of hard work that goes into it. Sonakshi makes him realise that  the field requires dedication and commitment just like any other field.

Has the show derived inspiration from Madhuri Dixit’s life?

No. It’s not inspired or based on Madhuri Dixit’s lifestyle. But I like this comparison being made because there is some resemblance but it’s not intentional.

You are making a comeback on TV after two years. Do you think this show was the right choice?

I don’t know what is right. Actors go for a convincing project. They look for the conviction in the story, the script, the makers and the characters they are playing. These are the deciding factors. I was sure about the concept and that the makers are putting their best foot forward. It is a love story of people from different fields. They are from differnt worlds and how they will fall in love is the concept of the show. I found this exciting and different. It is something that the audience would like to see. I believe it is a good decision.

How did you come on board for Rishi in SIT’s web series?

It was Mohit Hussien and Chhavi Mittal’s (makers and founders of Shitty Ideas Trending) conviction. When I got to know about my character, there were no ifs and buts in saying yes. I was able to connect with it. I said yes, without even thinking about the medium. For me, it was a good character, with focused makers and brilliant co-actors.

Did you have to go out of your comfort zone?

I don’t think there is a comfort zone for me. Being an actor, I like my job to be uncomfortable. I love challenges. I don’t look for a comfort zone that I can be in but an entertaining one, where I can entertain the audience and earn their love.

How hard or easy was it for you to transition from Rishi to Dr Rohit?

It was a complete transition. Rishi was a funny character who had different views and different perspective of looking at things while Dr Rohit is just the opposite. It was challenging to bring that conviction in both the characters. I decided to take a small break from Rishi so that I can do justice to Dr Rohit and give my 100 per cent.

What kind of roles do you find more challenging?

I find Rohit Sippy’s character more challenging. I have to learn a lot of medical jargons. When you dress like a surgeon, you have to look real. You can’t just act, you have to be natural. This needs research. So, to get into the shoe of Dr Rohit Sippy was the hardest.

How has your journey been so far?

The journey is not over yet. I believe there’s a long way to go. But, it has been fabulous till now. The amount of love that I have received from the audience is overwhelming. I feel blessed to have worked with some finest makers from my first show Saarrthi to Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum.
