An inspiring & ernest attempt

Super 30

*ing: Hrithik Roshan, Mrunal Thakur, Virendra Saxena, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Shrivastava

Rated: 6/10

Almost everybody who has ever wanted to get admission in an IIT has heard the name Anand Kumar  — the educationalist and a mathematician best known for his Super 30 programme — which he started in Patna, Bihar in 2002. It is his life which is the subject of the movie Super 30.

Even though one may have heard of real life people’s inspirational work, a biopic film made on them make for an interesting watch not for the acting abilitiy of the actors but the journey of the person on whom the film is based on.

Director Vikas Bahl has ensured that there is never a dull moment as the film progresses and showcases the sheer doggedness of Kumar played by Hrithik Roshan. That how despite roadblocks at each and every stage — he was shot at and beaten — yet he never gave up on his dream of teaching underprivileged students and prepare them for IITs and set an example for the world to see. The post script gives one a sneak peek into the real Kumar’s life.

Hrithik Roshan has given his best to play the lead protagonist — the enthusiasm with which he has played the role is commendable.

The problem here is not the subject matter or that Hrithik Roshan has slipped up but the idea of him being cast as Kumar doesn’t sit well on his shoulders. What with the issue is darken skin-tone and the Bihar accent that he has been unable to master. This makes the portrayal of the character he plays a mismatch.

However kudos to the filmmakers for this ernest attempt on the life of a person who, unfortunately is suffering from acoustic neuroma, a brain tumour.
