Slow start that picks pace in 2nd half

Made in china

*ing: Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy, Boman Irani, Paresh Rawal, Gajraj Rao, Sumeet Vyas, Manoj Joshi

Rated: 6/10

Being part of films that are different appear to have become Rajkummar Rao’s go to mantra lately. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and Judgementall Hai Kya, released this year, are cases in point. With movies like Stree, Newton and Bareilly Ki Barfi in his kitty, the audience also expects amazing things from him.

The question to ask is whether he has been able to deliver what is due from his films? After a sluggish start — it takes director, Mikhil Musale, more than half-hour to warm up to tell his story — that Made in China gives a glimpse where it is going. Given that the film is 129 minutes, wasting so much time to stir things up and build it up makes one wonder at Musale’s thought process.

However, the good is that he took corrective steps in the second half. With stalwarts like Boman Irani, Paresh Rawal and Gajraj Rao (who has a small part) the film that touches upon a very sensitive issue — sex is bound to make one sit up and notice since it comes with a message albeit subtle.

Another good are the dialogues. Take this for example: Humare desh mein kaam ke time par sex aur sex ke time par kaam. This and many more such one-liners are gems that will tickle the funny bone.

Then there is some absoultely brilliant performance by Irani. While he may not have as much screen space as we would have liked him to have, as Dr Vardhi, a sexual wellness doctor, he plays the character to a T even if one is reminded of similarity in look from another movie.

Rao, as Raghu, a Gujarati businessman plays the role well. Strangely, while he is there in almost all the scenes, he doesn’t have to do much. Paresh Rawal comes in to give his gyan to Raghu.

It is what happens at the end that makes Made in China an interesting watch.
