Former footballer Zulfiqar passes away

Hyderabad: Former India footballer Mohammed Zulfiqaruddin, who was a part of the fourth place finishing team in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, passed away here Sunday. He was 83 and survived by three sons and two daughters. As a 17-year old, Zulfiqaruddin was a part of the Indian squad which had finished fourth in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. But he did not play any match. India lost to Bulgaria 0-3 in the Bronze-medal match in Melbourne to finish fourth, a result considered one of the finest moments in the country's football history. Zulfiqaruddin made his international debut in 1959 at the Merdeka Cup in against Singapore. He represented India in three International matches, and scored one goal. He was also a part of the Indian team in the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games. In his condolence message, AIFF President Praful Patel said: "It is sad to hear that Mr. Zulfiqaruddin is no more. His contribution to Indian football will never be forgotten. I share the grief."

Lahiri drops to Tied-63rd

Honolulu: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri ended with a one-over 71 in the third round that saw him drop to three-under 207 for a Tied-63rd spot at the Sony Open here. The lead stayed with Matt Kuchar, who kept another clean card and shot a 4-under 66 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sony Open as he goes for his second victory this season on the PGA TOUR. Kuchar ended a three-year drought by winning the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last fall. In his third round, Lahiri found seven of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation but left no misses on putts within 10 feet. Lahiri bogeyed the 460-yard par-4 sixth, getting on the green in 2 and three putting, moving him to one-over for the round. His only birdie of the day came on ninth, when he landed his third shot to seven feet and holed it for a birdie. Kuchar has made only one bogey through 54 holes at Waialae Country Club, and his 18-under 192 was the lowest 54-hole score of his career.

Valladolid holds Valencia to 1-1 tie

Valencia: Real Valladolid held host Valencia to 1-1 draw in a La Liga contest at the Mestalla stadium. Spanish midfielder Daniel Parejo opened the scoring for Valencia at minute 70, while his countryman Ruben Alcaraz put Valladolid on equal terms at minute 81, reports Efe news. With the tie on Saturday night, Valencia provisionally holds the 10th spot in the standings with 23 points, with a one-point advantage ahead of 14th-place Valladolid. Valencia dominated the play, maintaining ball possession from the first whistle and with midfielder Carlos Soler and forward Rodrigo creating a couple of scoring chances, but with no success.

Arrows hammer Shillong Lajong FC 3-0

Mumbai: The 65th game of the ongoing Hero I-League saw hosts Shillong Lajong FC go down 0-3 to Indian Arrows at the JLN Stadium here on Sunday. Vikram Pratap Singh (18'), Lalengmawia (32'), and Ninthoi (45' + 3') scored for the Indian Arrows, sealing their victory. Lalengmawia was adjudged the Hero of the Match. Indian Arrows showed their attacking intent from the first minute and went on pressing hard. They were constantly troubling the Lajong defence but a lack of a good finish eluded them. It took Shillong Lajong around 10 minutes to regroup and start an attack on the threatening Indian Arrows. The first half came to an end with the hosts Shillong Lajong FC trailing Indian Arrows by three goals. The second half began with Shillong Lajong introducing Phrangki Buam into the attack. This resulted in more attacks from the hosts but the Indian Arrows, known for their strong defence, ensured that Lajong did not get close to creating any trouble for them. Both the sides then failed to score in the second half as the Arrows registered a thumping 0-3 victory.
