Triumph Knights keep hopes alive

Mumbai: Parikshit Valsangkar and Akash Parkar lived up to their reputations as reliable all-rounders to keep defending champions Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the hunt for a semi-final berth in the second edition of T20 Mumbai. The duo's impressive efforts with the bat and the ball helped the Knights pocket the must-win game against Eagle Thane Strikers by 38 runs on Saturday. While Valsangkar's quick-fire 39 (24b, 6x4, 1x6) at No 3 gave the Knights the early impetus, Parkar's powerful 34 (20b, 1x4, 3x6) –    aided by in-form Karan More's 36 (26b, 4x4) –  gave the teaam a perfect finish to post a decent 162 for seven. The Strikers then faltered on a slowing pitch and eventually end with 124 for nine and lost the game.

Isner out of Roland Garros

Paris: World number 11 John Isner on Friday withdrew from the French Open, the season's second Grand Slam tournament, with a foot injury. The 34-year-old said he had not recovered from the injury he suffered at the Miami Masters in March where he finished runner-up to Roger Federer. "Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Roland Garros this year," Isner, who has made the last-16 in Paris on three occasions, wrote on Twitter. "The foot injury I sustained in Miami had not fully healed and there's just no way I could possibly compete on the clay in Paris. "This is a bump in the road and I'm certain I will fully recover. Hope to see everyone at Wimbledon." World number eight Kevin Anderson announced last month that he would also miss the French Open due to an elbow injury.

Ibrahimovic hit with 2 match ban

Los Angeles: Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been suspended for two games after grabbing New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson by the neck during Los Angeles Galaxy's defeat last weekend, Major League Soccer said on Friday. The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced in a statement it was sanctioning Ibrahimovic for violent conduct after the incident in the 86th minute of the game on May 11. Ibrahimovic and Johnson wrestled each other to the floor after coming together in the closing stages of Galaxy's defeat last week. Both players received a yellow card for the incident for unsportsmanlike conduct. Johnson later accused Ibrahimovic of losing his cool. It is the second retrospective sanction Ibrahimovic has received in recent weeks.

Ahmedabad to host Intercon Cup

New Delhi: The second edition of the Hero Intercontinental Cup will be held at the TransStadia Arena in Ahmedabad from July 7 to 18, the All India Football Federation announced on Saturday. All the four teams will play each other in a round robin format with the top two teams qualifying for the final. Lyles beats Coleman in 100m

Shanghai: Noah Lyles launched himself from near the back of the field to beat fellow American Christian Coleman by just 0.006secs and win the 100 metres at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday. Lyles's blistering 9.86sec was the best time this year and a personal best, and lays down a marker ahead of the world championships in the autumn and the Tokyo Olympics next summer. The 21-year-old, part of a new generation of American sprinters, ducked to the line with a glance to his left to Coleman. A photo finish confirmed Lyles had won. Third was South Africa's Akani Simbine and fourth last year's Shanghai victor, Britain's Reece Prescod. It is early days in the season, but Lyles and his rivals are already eyeing the Doha world championships in September while the 2020 Tokyo Games also loom.
