Pollard appointed as new WI skipper

New Delhi: Following a disappointing performance at the World Cup and thereafter a complete whitewash against India, Cricket West Indies (CWI) have reportedly decided to sack Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite as skippers of ODI and T20I teams and have named Kieron Pollard as captain in limited-overs cricket. The decision was taken by CWI Board of Directors on Saturday, the first day of their two-day regular quarterly meeting in Port of Spain. Pollard was the player proposed by the selection committee and when the vote was taken, he got the support from six directors while the other six abstained. The 32-year-old last played an ODI in 2016. He was kept in the reserves for the 2019 World Cup and then featured in the T20Is against India.

Mirabai to lead at World c’ship

New Delhi: Former champion Mirabai Chanu will lead a seven-member Indian team in the upcoming Weightlifting World Championship to be held in Pattaya, Thailand from from September 18 to 27. The World Championship is a Gold-level qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo  Olympics. The squad, which is already training in Thailand, has four women and three men lifters. The quartet of Mirabai (49kg), Commonwealth Championship Gold medallist Jhilli Dalabehera (45kg), Sneha Soren (55kg) and Rakhi Halder (64kg) will represent India in the women's events. Among men, Youth Olympic Gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67kg) will make his World Championship debut. Besides, Commonwealth Championship gold medallist Ajay Singh (81kg) and national champion Achinta Sheuli (73) will also ply their trade.

Prannoy out of China & Korea Open 

New Delhi: Star shuttler HS Prannoy will miss at least two tournaments on the circuit after being diagnosed with dengue. Prannoy will first miss the China Open, which will be held at Changzhou, from September 17 to 22 and then the Korea Open, scheduled to be held at Incheon, from September 24 to 29. Prannoy took to Twitter to inform his fans about his health condition. "Quick update — Would be out of action for unpredictable days after being diagnosed with dengue. Will not be a part of Indian team for China and Korea open next week. Hopefully can get back to good health ASAP,"Prannoy tweeted.

team to attend kohli stand unveiling

New Delhi: The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) will be unveiling a stand at the Feroz Shah Kotla after India captain Virat Kohli on Thursday and the entire team will be there to witness the momentous occasion. Speaking to IANS, a senior board functionary confirmed that the boys will be present at the unveiling ceremony which will take place at the Weightlifting Auditorium of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. "The boys will be there when DDCA unveils the stand in Kohli's name. The boys are assembling in the capital on Thursday before heading to Dharamsala on Friday," the functionary said.

men to play Russia; women face usa

Lausanne : In a favourable draw, India's men's hockey team was on Monday pitted against lower-ranked Russia while the women's team drew a tricky USA in the final round of the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers. The teams will compete in two back-to-back matches to make it to the Tokyo Games. The men's team will compete on November 1-2 while the women's team will take on the American side on the same dates in Bhubaneswar. Eight-time Olympic champions India are ranked five in the world while the Russians are placed 22 in the FIH world rankings. The women American team is placed four places below India (ranked 9) it won't be a cake walk for the Rani Rampal-led side when they take the field for the FIH Olympic qualifiers.
