‘Be alert on receding groundwater’

Taking serious note of the receding ground water level and information of water crisis being created in other areas of the state, Chief Minister Kamal Nath told the government/ administration to remain alert and vigilant.

He said that considering the need of water in the coming days, comprehensive arrangements will have to be made on priority basis from now itself. Nath said that adequate arrangements must be made in order to ensure smooth supply of drinking water to all citizens in the summer season. He directed all local bodies to start repair work of all the drinking water sources in summer and check their quality as well. He told to seek help of local public representatives to ensure adequate water supply.

Nath has instructed the Public Health Engineering and Principal Secretary Urban Development and Administration to identify potential water scarce areas and make arrangements to ensure the availability of drinking water there. He told the public representatives to establish a rapport with local people in their respective areas and seek their support in supply of drinking water.

Nath has asked all the District Collectors, office-bearers, commissioners and chief executive officers of Municipal Corporations, Municipal Council and District Panchayat to convene a meeting immediately in this connection and review the water supply arrangements along with local public representatives and sarpanchs. He told to make time-bound work plans for drinking water supply and conduct reviews every week.

Immediately inform in case assistance is needed at the government level so that essential resources can be made available on time. Make use of other government and private water resources including wells, tube wells and hand pumps. Immediately arrange for repair of hand pumps, tube wells where required. Pay special attention to the quality of water so that people can be protected from diseases.

The Chief Minister said that to provide water through tankers in places where water sources have either dried up or are unavailable so that the strategy is planned from now itself. Also make sure that people do not have to arrange water from inaccessible areas.

Nath has directed to ensure water supply arrangements besides launching a campaign to make people aware about water conservation. He told to take special care not to waste water as well as to take necessary decisions on time to maintain the water supply system at the district level.
