The Odisha Nibarana Committee, Ganjam district branch has urged the Government to declare Odisha as a liquor-free State by implementing the total prohibition Act on the 150th Jayanti of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 instead of setting up a big statue of his.
Committee branch convener Rabi Rath said that in 1957, the then Chief Minister Late Naba Krushna Choudhury had introduced the prohibition Act in the State, but it is yet to be implemented. Due to liquor addiction, the law and order situation in the State is deteriorating and crores of families are being destroyed.
Committee members said that if the State Government really has respect for Gandhiji then it should implement the Article 47 of the Constitution (prohibition) on October 2 and set an example for other States.
