A photo exhibition titled ‘Island Cultures of India’ was inaugurated by RK Chaturvedi, IAS (AS&FA, Ministry of Culture, Government of India) at Rock Art Heritage indoor exhibition hall of Indira Gandhi Rashtiya Manav Sangrahalaya.

The present Photo Exhibition explores diverse cultural ecology in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Brahmaputra river island of Assam, floating villages of Loktak Lake, Manipur and the coastal lagoon of Odisha.

Generally, the connotation of an island begins with a unique and naturally formed area of land, surrounded by water. It has been generally conceptualized as closed, self-sustaining eco-system with water as natural barrier providing life to flourish in harmony with nature.

Geographically, islands are broadly divided into two categories- Oceanic and Continental; but the concept of island culture is vivid and diverse.

India is blessed with beautiful river island of Majuli and Umanand which is considered to be the largest and smallest river island in the world.

An enchanting oval-shaped Loktak Lake in the valley of Manipur has an incredible story to narrate about the life and people of the fishermen who thrive on floating villages.

The Chilikalake in the state of Odisha provide fascinating example of life in the coastal lagoon. The protected tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar islands of the Indian sub-continent along with admirable features of the Lakshadeepisland along the western peninsula, showcases profound culture and tradition of island habitation.

Although, they appear secluded from the mainland, they are united with a strong cultural entity and resilient belief system.

Life in the islands, be it oceanic, lagoon, riverine, delta or lake, all of them exhibit special modes of subsistence which make them distinct from the mainland habitation.

On this occasion Director, IGRMS, Prof Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri, Dilip Singh, ITS (Joint Director, IGRMS) and visitors were present in large number.
