‘Vector-borne diseases hit K’put growth’

A State-level seminar on ‘Koraput-Development and CUO’ was organised here on Friday. Central University of Orissa (CUO) Vice-Chancellor I/c Prof Sharat Kumar Palita inaugurated the seminar and delivered the key note address as the chief guest.

Director, Biju Patnaik Tribal Agro-Biodiversity Centre, MSSRF, Jeypore Dr Krishnakumar K Navaladi and Scientist ‘F’ and Deputy Director and Office-in-Charge, Vector Control Research Centre, Koraput, Dr SS Sahu spoke. 

Prof Palita deliberated on the role of the CUO towards development of the region after 10 years of its establishment. He directed all the 14 departments to initiate Koraput centric research for development of the region.

Imbalance in food consumption pattern which is called as hidden hunger prevail in Koraput though it is a biodiversity hotspot of the world, K Navaladi said. He gave importance to promotion of agricultural productivity, farmer friendly technology, drudgery reduction, sustainable livelihood and proper training to the people for development in livelihood.

Scientist Dr Sahu, who served more than 33 years in research on vector born diseases in Koraput, said, “Vector born diseases like malaria, dengue, Japanese encephalitis and chickengunya are the major hurdles in the process of the development of the Koraput and tribes. Only awareness and preventive measures can control the vector born diseases making people able to contribute their labour and energy towards development.

Assistant Professor, Biodiversity and Conservation of Natural Resources Dr Kakoli Banerjee compeered the seminar and HoD, Sociology and Chief Warden Dr Kapila Khemundu proposed the vote of thanks. Students and staff members of the university were present at a large.
