A person died and 14 others were critically injured when an auto-rickshaw by which they were travelling was hit by a jeep near Siangbali area under the Daringibadi police station in Kandhamal district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Manguli Nayak of Kerubadi village in the district. Sources said the passengers were returning from a weekly haat in Daringibadi when a Mahindra Bolero coming from the opposite direction collided with their vehicle.
While Nayak died on the spot, other injured, including the driver, were admitted to the Daringibadi Government hospital. Later, five of them were shifted to Brahmapur as their condition deteriorated. Getting information, police reached the spot, seized both the mangled vehicles and started a probe.
Police have also sent the body of the deceased to a nearby hospital for postmortem and detained the jeep driver, sources said.
