Keeping in view the receding water level at the Hirakud Dam, the authorities onTuesday closed 10 gates of the reservoir. Currently, the floodwater was being discharged through only four sluice gates of the dam.
The decision was taken following a stable inflow of water into the dam.
At present, the water outflow from the dam is higher than the inflow.
The water level at the reservoir recorded 619.37ft against storage capacity of 630 ft by 7.00 am on the day.
The closure of the gates has also brought a sigh of relief the residents of low-lying areas, who were living in constant fear of flooding.
Earlier on Monday, seven sluice gates were opened to release excess floodwater from the reservoir.
