As many as 11 elderly patients have complained of losing eyesight after cataract surgeries at a private hospital in Indore.

Surprisingly, this is the same hospital where a similar negligence was reported in year 2010.

Swinging into action, the Kamal Nath Government has announced Rs 50,000 each for the affected patients and ordered a high-level probe besides suspending the licence of the hospital for the gross negligence.

The said Operation Theatre has been sealed while Health Minister Tulsi Silwat has ordered an FIR against those guilty.

Under National Programme for Control of Blindness (NACB), a cataract surgery camp was organised for 14 patients by Indore Eye Hospital in Indore on Aug 8.

Post surgeries, 11 of the total patients started complaining of irritation and swelling in eyes which eventually led to loss of vision recently. These patients are aged between 50 to 85 years and hail to economically weaker background.

In 2010, in a similar case of negligence, 15 patients who had underwent cataract surgeries at the same private hospital had lost vision and the incident had kicked up a huge row.

The state government swung into action on Saturday constituting a high level committee comprising administrative officers, medical experts and police officers to probe into the negligence charges.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath expressing grief over the incident said that the Collector Indore has been asked to probe into the incident. “How the private hospital got back permission to function nine years after a similar episode,” said Nath adding that the guilty won’t be spared.

Announcing all possible help for the victims for treatment, Nath claimed that Rs 50,000 each would be given to those who have lost vision.

The victims have been shifted to Choithram hospital in Indore and their treatment cost would be borne by the state government, said Health minister Tulsiram Silawat who incidentally hails to the same city.

Efforts are made to avail the services of experts from noted Shankar Netralaya Chennai said the minister adding the Red Cross is releasing Rs 20,000 each for the victims as immediate help. The hospital’s licence has been suspended and stringent action would be taken if yhe hospital is found guilty in the probe, said Silawat.

Dr Sudheer Mahashabde, a senior surgeon of Indore Eye Hospital claimed that it wasn’t due to the cataract surgery but it seems a case of some infection which led to post surgery complications. In 70 to 80% cases, the vision could be restored with proper treatment, said the physician.

Indore Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Pravin Jadia claimed that after a probe, the said private hospital was given permission to function once again in year 2011. The condition of the patients is improving after fresh treatment, said Dr Jadia.
