119 elephants electrocuted in 10 years

Forest and Environment Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha on Tuesday informed the Assembly that as many as 119 elephants died of electrocution in the State during the last 10 years from 2009 to 2019.

In response to a question of BJD member Badri Narayan Patra, the Minister said Keonjhar reported the maximum electrocution deaths during the period. As many as 26 elephants have been electrocuted during the current year, which is the highest ever in State’s history.

While 12 died due to coming into contact with sagging wires, another 12 died of live wire trapping by the poachers, according to the information submitted by the Minister.
