Ramgarh Child Welfare Committee (CWC), with the help of district police, rescued two infants, a boy and a girl, from being sold on Wednesday.
CWC member Akash Sharma informed The Pioneer that the committee, along with police, raided a private hospital, Vrindavan Research Centre, situated in Ramgarh-Ranchi road on Wednesday after getting a tip off.
“We have been getting information about baby selling business happening in the hospital for quite some time but we could never have enough proof to conduct a raid. This time, we were confident about the tip off. So, a team was formed with the help of district administration and police and the raid was conducted,” Sharma said.
In raid, the team found two infants in the hospital having no documents related to them. “The hospital management claimed that the infants are twins and they were born to an unwed minor girl who died after giving birth to them. However, there was no document related to admitting the mother,” Sharma said.
He added, “The hospital owner claimed that she was planning to adopt the two children. However, what raised a red flag was that the management did not inform the police or CWC about the entire incident.”
The people from the hospital management allegedly involved in the crime were taken for interrogation by police on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the two children, after being produced to the CWC bench, were handed over to Special Adoption Agency (SAA) Vatsalya Dattak Grahan Sansthan situated in Hazaribag for starting the process of adoption.
Sharma said that they had information about someone bringing infants from Bengal and sell them to the hospital for Rs 15,000 each child.
“Then the hospital would sell each child for Rs. Three to four lakh for childless couples,” he said.
Sharma added, “We had information that four months ago the hospital administration had sold an infant girl to a couple in Gomia block of Bokaro for Rs 3.5 lakh but because we didn’t have proper proof, we couldn’t take action back then.”
The CWC member said that now that the hospital administration has been caught involved in this case red handed, they are hoping to unfold other layers of the case and reach more people involved.
Meanwhile, officer in charge of Ramgarh Police Station informed that the interrogation is ongoing and further action will be taken accordingly.
