A 22-year-old man died in a road accident on Jassowala-Lakhanwala motor road on Sunday, while the person riding with him has been critically injured. Father of the deceased has filed a complaint in Sahaspur police station, on the basis of which the investigation has been started.

The deceased has been identified as Shahrukh (22), a resident of Lakhanwala while the injured is Ashu (28), a resident of Jassowala.

According to the information provided by local police, Shahrukh was returning on his motorbike after working the night shift at a factory in Selaqui at the time of the accident. The injured Ashu had taken a lift from him on the way and was riding pillion. While trying to overtake a car ahead, they got hit by another car which was coming from Herbertpur.

The impact of collision left both the riders in critical condition. They were taken to the Sahaspur hospital, where Shahrukh succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead. The driver of the car which hit them fled from the accident scene.

According to the district officials, there are various traffic offences involved in the case, including the attempt to overtake which lead to the accident. The deceased and the pillion rider, both were also not wearing helmets, which may have prevented grievous injuries to their heads. 

It is important to mention here that in the year 2018, total 1,468 road accidents were reported in the state in which 1,047 people died while 1,571 were gravely injured.

It is also important to mention here that traffic offences have been identified as the biggest cause behind majority of road accidents.
