Beware, if you are breaking traffic rules in the national Capital as the Delhi Police has planned to install 3D Radar Based Red Light Violation Detection Camera (RLVD) system to ensure smooth and safe flow of traffic in city. The project is planned to kickstart from July this year.

This not the only project Delhi Traffic Police is planning to install this year. According to Taj Hassan, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic, several monitoring systems such as Gantry-mounted radar-based over speed detection system will be introduced this year to combat vehicle driving in speed.

"Police will also purchase speed guns and will also implement Intelligence Traffic Management System (ITMS) this year for the smooth functioning of traffic in the city. The department has also planned to issue challan automatically through SMS (message) for effective prosecution," said the Special CP.

"ITMS has been approved by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The process of hiring consultant is initiated and detailed project report (DPR) for ITMS will be prepared by August 2019," said the Special CP. "In May this year traffic police will also be implementing new E-challan system with collaboration with NIC. The project will have real-time integration of traffic police challans with Sarthi and Vahan database. Database of repeat offenders will be made through this system which will help traffic police personnel to check the previous history of traffic violations," said the Special CP.

This year Delhi saw a marginal drop by 1.8 per cent in road accidents as compared to 2017. According to the data, 6,274 accidents were reported in the national capital in 2018 as against 6,386 in 2017. As many as 1,604 persons were killed and 5,831 were injured in road accidents in 2018. In 2017, 1,510 persons were killed and 6,332 were injured.  

Of the 6,274 accidents reported last year, 1,562 were fatal accidents while rest fell in the simple category.

Systematic analysis of the accidents to determine the causes, time and place and types of offending vehicles and suitable deployment of night checking-cum-patrolling by traffic police has resulted in check on road accidents, police said. Strict action was taken against drunk driving, speeding, red light jumping, goods vehicles plying during restricted hours on specified roads, officials said, adding engineering faults were identified and corrective remedial measures were initiated.
