Four kanwariyas were killed in a road mishap in Badaun while BJP chief of Unnao district Srikant Katiyar and two supporters were injured when a LPG cylinder exploded at a tea stall on Agra-Lucknow Expressway on Tuesday.

As per reports, Katiyar and his supporters stopped at the tea stall on their way to attend a meeting. An eyewitness said that a truck driver and cleaner were cooking food when their small LPG cylinder caught fire. The driver threw the cylinder towards the tea stall where it exploded, injuring the three BJP activists. All three were rushed to Trauma Centre of KGMU where their condition was stated to be stable.

In Badaun, seven persons, including four kanwariyas and two children, were killed while five others injured when a speeding wheat-laden truck overturned at Haraura crossing in Usava area late on Monday night. The truck was coming from Badaun when the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting a turn and it toppled over a tea stall. Some people, including kanwariyas standing there, got trapped under the truck.

SSP Ashok Kumar Tripathi said that the truck was moving at a high speed and the driver applied brakes to avoid hitting a stray animal. In the process, the vehicle overturned on Hazratpur-Mayu road. A JCB was pressed into service to remove the truck and rescue the victims.

Among the deceased were some kanwariyas, who are yet to be identified. Tea stall owner Sompal and his two granddaughters Kajal (5) and Nandini (2) died in the mishap. In protest, irate villagers tried to torch the truck but were stopped by the police. The truck driver was arrested while the injured were admitted to a hospital.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 and free medical treatment to those injured.
