4 killed in road mishap in Dumka

In an early morning road accident at Dumka, four persons including two women were killed and three others sustained injuries when a pick-up van rammed over them while they were waiting for a bus. The accident occurred at Jamjori village under Masalia police station area on Saturday early morning.

The deceased have been identified as Rasan Murmu (40 year old), Hopni Soren (40 year old), Dhaneshwar Marandi ( 45-year-old) and Gayana Murmu (42-year-old). The injured have been identified as Nuni Soren (30-year-old), Sarita Murmu (14-year-old), Sushil Murmu (10-year-old).

Police sources said that on Saturday morning Rasan Murmu alsong with his family members was waiting for bus near the road side. Rasan along with others were waiting for bus as they had to go to Jamtara for attending some family function.

While Rasan and his family members were waiting near the road side, the speeding pick up van which was coming from opposite direction rammed over persons waiting near the road side.

Dumka Superintendent of Police YS Ramesh said, “The incident occurred when the people were standing by the roadside, waiting for a bus, at Jamjori village under Masalia police station limits. Four people died on the spot while three were admitted at Sadar hospital Dumka.”

According to Masalia police, the driver of the pick-up van after hitting people waiting on the road side left his vehicle and escaped from the spot. After the incident the villagers gathered near the road side and admitted the injured person at Sadar hospital. The villagers staged a road block demanding compensation from government for deceased family members. The villagers also damaged the pick-up van.

Police claimed that the condition of injured persons is serious. The police after incident conducted raid and nabbed the driver of the pick-up van. Masalia police station, SHO Sanjay Kumar said, “The driver of pick-up van Shaikh Mahir has been arrested. The driver told the police that he fall asleep out on the road and lost his balance.” The police have booked the driver under section of 279, 337, 338, 304 (A) of Indian Penal Code.
