42 Paryatak Mitras get life saving techniques training

As many as 42 Paryatak Mitras from various districts of the State are being provided training on life saving techniques by the State Tourism Department and National Institute of Water Sports of Ministry of Tourism.

A total of 300 Paryatak Mitras applied for the training programme through their respective district administrations, of which 100 were called in for the training at Hotwar in the first phase.  Prayatak Mitras or tourism friends are local youths roped in by tourism department to help and guide tourists at various tourist spots across the State.

Rajeev Ranjan, joint director, Directorate of Tourism informed that the applicants underwent a basic swimming test to be eligible for the training.

“Of the 100 candidates, 80 turned up for the test and 42 were selected. The test was to swim 100 mts in three minutes. Also, the minimum educational qualification should be class eight. However, if the person is an exceptional swimmer, the educational qualification can be relaxed,” he said.

The joint director informed that those who could not clear the swimming test this time can brush up their swimming skills and approach the department again. “If they meet up the eligibility criteria they would be provided training in the later phases,” he said.

The life saving technique training will be of five days followed by a five day training of powerboat driving. “Those who successfully learn the life saving techniques can opt for powerboat driving training. Once they are trained, they will be provided license and will be eligible to drive these boats at tourist spots like dams and rivers,” Ranjan said.

The training would focus on how to save a drowning person, giving first aid, CPR and other necessary techniques. The second phase of training will be organized from February 27 in which 150 more Paryatak Mitras will be trained.

The training is being provided with an aim to boost water tourism in the State. Tourism Director Sanjiv Besra said, "The State has numerous waterfalls, dams and other water tourism destination which can be developed as wonderful tourism spots. The department is planning to start boating facilities at various water tourism spot for which the powerboat handling training is being provided."
