7 footover bridges to be built soon

Thursday, 22 August 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

In order to facilitate traffic movement and to provide a safe and secure crossing facility for the pedestrians, the national Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC)-the parent body of Rapid Rail Transit Corridor (RRTS) has decided to construct Foot over Bridges (FOBs) at seven locations, infamous on the alignment of Sarai Kale Khan-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor for accidents and traffic congestion.

The seven places where the FOBs will be constructed are Sihani Gate Chungi, Ordinance Factory (Murad Nagar), Railway Road (Murad Nagar), Railway Station Road (Modi Nagar), Modi Nagar Bus Stand, Hapur Road (Modi Nagar — Rajchopla) and Mohiuddinpur. The tender for the same has been floated recently and work will start soon.

The officials said these FOBs will be constructed and will be thrown open for the public before the completion of the 82 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor.

"This corridor will pass through Yamuna, Hindon River, Indian Railway tracks, Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) and will pass through densely populated areas of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. After Ghaziabad, it will run mostly on the median of Ghaziabad-Meerut Highway (erstwhile NH-58) and this highway witnesses a heavy flow of traffic and is surrounded by densely populated area. Thus, the NCRTC has taken this step to construct FOB to ensure safety of the pedestrians as well as a smooth flow of the traffic during the construction period," said a NCRTC official.

The transport body further added that it will construct FOB's wherever necessary on the corridor. "The locations of the FOBs are being identified in close coordination with the local as well as state administration. Moreover, these areas do not have a single Fob and the pedestrians risk their lives while crossing the road.  Thus, NCRTC is giving due emphasis to people's convenience at every stage of RRTS execution," said the official.

The train will have an operation speed of 160kmph but it will run on the speed of 100kmph only. Currently, it takes four hours to reach Meerut from Delhi but once this corridor will be erected, the travel time reduces to just 60 minutes.

The civil construction work on 17 km long priority section between Sahibabad to Duhai, of this corridor has started and the piers and viaduct will be visible soon. This priority section is expected to become operational by March 2023 while the full 82km long corridor from Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut and Modipuram will be open for public by March 2025.
