Monday, 11 March 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

With civic agencies failing in cleaning roads and the surroundings, some 800 mothers of 8000 of Dwarka, have taken the cudgels to restore cleanliness and hygiene in this part of the national Capital. The group was started by a 45 year-old housewife, Kajal Chanana with five members in 2016, has swelled up to over 8000 members who could be seen wielding brooms on the roads of Dwarka, supposed to be one of the biggest residential colonies in Asia.

Aiming to clean their surroundings and make the “Swachch Bharat Abhiyan” a success in their surrounding areas, the group, popularly known as ‘Dwarka Moms’ have taken up the initiative to stop open defecation, burning of leaves in the open, stop using of plastic bags and segregation of household wastes by separating plastic and re-cycling of the waste material and also make compost for tree plantation in the public parks.

The mothers first created the platform to explore their hidden talents in the form of street art, wall painting, tree plantation and seed ball making alonwgith taking care of their house chores and children. “Most of the time, a mom is the only one person who sacrifices everything to look after family. But it always saddened me, that why we are sitting at home even after having such good skills. Then I decided to create this group and also in Facebook. Within days I got good response and more mothers came forward with different ideas. Now, with exploring our talents, we mothers are also using our skills to make the city better”, says Kajal Chanana, the brain behind the Dwarka moms.

The mother’s brigade said, “After taking so many initiatives, we have now decided to make our are free of stench. We filed many complaints to the corporation and other concerned authorities but all our pleas fell on deaf ears. Our mission is to make Swachch Bharat Mission a true success and that it should not be confined to posters only,” they said mothers.

The Dwarka moms first started their journey with one Welcome Society to stop open defecation near their society as their first activity but now their list of societies, mothers and activities has reached to greater proportions. The mothers also added that their children have also joined them as volunteers during their school holidays  and they help with new techniques and ideas.

The mothers group has conducted more than 200 activities from ‘street arts, wall painting’, re-using the waste material, catering, counseling, distributing pads and teaching street kids and so on.

Dwarka moms have a number of skilled mothers from different fields such as Human resource, make-up artist, lawyer, engineer, writer, counselor, doctor, chef and so on. “Thus we created this group where different skills mixes together to give a good outcome to the society,” said Kajal Channa, the moving force behind this movement called Dwarka Moms.
