As talks about alliance with Congress yielded no results yet, 45-year-old Balbir Singh Jakhar, the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate from the West Delhi seat, the last of seven candidates announced by the party for Delhi Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, filed his nomination in national Capital.
Meanwhile, Jakhar’s affidavit was found to be incomplete by district election officer Thursday, which sent him notices. He has declared movable and immovable assets worth over Rs 3.28 crore.
An advocate, Jakhar, has shown an income of Rs 9,78,458 in his last year’s income tax return, while his wife, Anju Jakhar, a government servant, has shown an income of Rs 15,23,293 during the same period, according to the affidavit. He has declared movable assets worth Rs 1,85,25,444.05 which include deposits and cash possessed by him, his wife and his dependents. The AAP candidate has immovable assets worth Rs 1,22,50,000, including an inherited agricultural land in Mitraun village here worth Rs one crore, the affidavit said.
Jakhar has also filed an income tax return of Rs 2,58,243 as part of Hindu Unidivided Family (HUF) beneficiary, it said. He has no criminal cases pending against him, the affidavit said. Jakhar, who completed his LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, has liabilities of Rs 41,61,197.85 which include car loans and loans from private entities and individuals.
His affidavit, however, was found to be incomplete by the district election officer of west district who stated that the row on Government tax dues was missing. Senior AAP leaders and hundreds of supporters held a road show along with Jakhar before filing the nomination in west Delhi appealing to people to vote for the AAP to take up the demand of full statehood for the national Capital. Senior party leaders Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai were present when Balbir Singh Jakhar filed his nomination papers at the District Magistrate’s office in Raja Garden. Addressing the public, party state convener said “We have started campaigning on the issue of full statehood in Delhi. The party has finished the first round of campaigning and mass contact campaign has been launched from April 10 that will be ended on April 20,” Rai further said that the party candidate has started filing their nomination from today along with campaigning. “On April 20, three of our candidates from Chandni Chowk, East Delhi and North West seat will file nominations, he said, adding that the rest of three candidates South, North east and New Delhi will file their nominations on April 22nd.
“We are contesting this election with support of public and believe that public will support the party to speed up the development work in the city and to get the full statehood.
“You voted for BJP in 2014 but their MPs have not done any work for development of the city. The BJP promised statehood for Delhi and did not say even a single word in Parliament about the issue,” Rai said.6 The ruling AAP had earlier on March 2, announced the names of its candidates for the six Lok Sabha seats. The AAP had declared its seventh candidate for West Delhi Lok Sabha seats on Sunday. The party ‘ ‘insiders said the name of Balbir Singh Jhakhar was announced after the recalcitrant attitude of the Congress leadership towards forging an alliance in the National Capital.
The other six AAP candidates are Atishi from East Delhi, Guggan Singh from North-West Delhi, Raghav Chadha from South, Dilip Pandey from North-East, Pankaj Gupta from Chandni Chowk and Brijesh Goyal will contest from New Delhi seats. The BJP and Congress have not yet declared their candidates for elections in Delhi.
