AAP seeks action against Singla for violating code

Wednesday, 20 March 2019 | PNS | Chandigarh

The Aam Aadmi Party submitted a complaint against Punjab Cabinet Minister Vijay Inder Singla for allegedly influencing the voters of Sangrur parliamentary constituency by openly misusing his official position.

The written complaint was submitted to the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer by the party delegation led AAP MLA and the Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Harpal Singh Cheema demanding a “strict action” against Singla “for his indulgence in the flagrant violation of the model code of conduct and sanctioning the funds illegally to influence the voters in the Sangrur parliamentary constituency from where he is a likely Congress candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections”.

The complaint stated that Singla, who was a sitting MLA from and a prospective Lok Sabha candidate from Sangrur, “misused his official position even as the model code of conduct is already in force since March 10”, making it mandatory for the State and Central Governments and the party candidates to stay away from making announcements in any shape with a view to alluring voters.

Cheema said the ruling Congress Government in the State had thrown code of conduct to winds and its Ministers were indulging in malpractices to woo voters. “Recent example is of Sangrur MLA and Punjab PWD Minister Singla, who, in blatant violation of the code of conduct, tried to induce voters in constituency by splurging funds worth crores for repairs or maintenance of Government schools,” he added. “If violations of code of conduct are not nipped in the bud, more serious violations by ruling party could not be ruled out,” he said.
