After 11 yrs, NSUI picks woman for prez in DU poll

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has nominated woman candidate after almost 11 years for the upcoming high voltage student poll scheduled on September 12 in Delhi University.

Chetna Tyagi, a student of Saheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening) was known for one of the best swimmer, won medals and awards for the sport, has been nominated by the NSUI on Thursday for the post of president.

“Woman empowerment is very important in the very early stage especially during school and college period. Delhi is not very safe for women and students from around the corner the city travel far to attend the college for which safe travelling is needed. Besides, my aim is equality. I will fight for gender discrimination, special woman only bus service for woman students,” said Tyagi, who was also the former central councilor and DUSU executive councilor.

Besides, the NSUI has fielded Ankit Bharti, a Dalit student for the Vice-President post, Ashish Lamba for the General Secretary Post and Abhishek Chaprana for Joint Secretary Post.

While the ABVP has fielded Akshit Dahiya for the post of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president, Pradeep Tanwar for the vice president post, Yogit Rathee for the general secretary post and Shivangi Kherwal for the post of joint secretary.

Gearing up for the upcoming student polls, the NSUI said, “The NSUI will work for gender equality and woman empowerment and will create a better campus for the students where everyone will be equal. We are also proud to note that a woman candidate has been nominated for the presidential candidate for the first time after years,” said NSUI National general secretary Ruchi Gupta.

Adding, the NSUI said, our candidate will raise issues of gender discrimination in the campus, problems faced by the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in DU and the demolition of ancient Ravidas Temple in Delhi.

NSUI is committed to qual education opportunity for all youth, woman empowerment, social justice and equal opportunity for all.”

While ABVP said, it will work for a “credible, responsible and student-friendly” union and challenge “anti-national forces” on the Delhi University campus.

The ABVP Presidential candidate who has won awards in body building championships, said,” Students should encourage to participate in sports and for that the varsity should have a sports environment. Thus, more talented students can take part in the Olympics.

The ABVP which is currently reining the DUSU with three posts has filed nomination papers for the upcoming polls on Wednesday.

Tanwar, a MA (Hindi) student, fighting for Vice Presidential post said, his aim is to make the campus a green campus with large number of plantations to reduce air pollution in the city.

ABVP’s General Secretary Candidate confidently expressed his confidence that the ABVP will win all four posts. “I have been active in this struggle against anti-national forces while I was a president of the Ramjas College Students’ Union. I am sure will all the posts and will challenge such elements if it wins in the elections. We will win all the post and will work hard to ensure “strict action” against “anti-national forces” on the campus,” Rathee said.

While the ABVP’s woman candidate Kherwal, fighting for Joint Secretary Post, said she will ensure that the campus is safe for women students. The DUSU polls will take place on September 12.

Deshbandu College for the Vice President post, Vikas from Hansraj College for Secretary Post and Chetna, students of Miranda House for Joint Secretary Post. The DUSU polls will take place on September 12.
