AIIMS celebrates silver jubilee of Transplantation of Human Organs Act

All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) celebrated “Silver Jubilee Celebrations of ‘Transplantation of Human Organs Act’ and organised various activities to create awareness among common public and in order to motivate the employees of the institution to spearhead the cause of promoting organ and tissue donation.

“Transplantation of Human Organs Act” (THOA) was enacted in 1994 by Parliament of India with the objective of regulation of removal, storage and transplantation of human organs for therapeutic purposes and for the prevention of commercial dealings in human organs. This landmark legislation has provided much needed impetus to organ donation in the country,” said a senior official of AIIMS.

Dr Aarti Vij, Professor and in-charge of ‘Organ Retrieval banking Organisation’ (ORBO) of AIIMS said that the department was established in 2003 with an objectives to encourage organ donation, fair and equitable distribution & optimum utilization of human organs. “ORBO was the first public sector facility created in India to promote organ & tissue donation. ORBO runs a mandatory in service education & training program on “Cadaver Organ donation” and till date 665 resident doctors and 677 nursing officers have been trained,” she added.

“Brain Death and Organ Donation” has also been included in the MBBS curriculum at AIIMS. As part of its continuous efforts in promoting the noble cause of organ and tissue donation among general public, around 150 awareness camps were organized by ORBO in various schools, colleges, hospitals, NGO’s, RWA’s, corporate offices etc in the year 2018-19,” said Dr Vij.

She also informed that AIIMS is the first hospital in the country to perform heart transplantation, kidney and pancreas dual transplantation, to have cadaveric bone bank, largest heart valve bank etc.

With an aim to support this awareness campaign, a friendly cricket match was organised wherein faculty team led by AIIMS Director Professor Randeep Guleria and residents’ team led by Dean Professor V K Bahl. Families of donors were invited as special guests and were felicitated by Director, Dean and Dr Aarti vij. AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria lauded their contribution and said that the families were gracious enough to take decision to donate the organs of their beloved ones in the most painful moments of their lives.
