Friday, 19 April 2019 | Staff Reporter | GURUGRAM

Former Haryana Finance Minister and Congress senior party leader in Haryana Captain (retd) Ajay Yadav on Thursday filed his nomination in the Gurugram constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

While Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate Rao Inderjit Singh is expected to file his nomination on Friday after a rally at Vyapar Sadan on the Mehrauli-Gurugram road. Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) alliance have not announced their candidates from Gurugram yet.

Randeep Singh Surjewala was interacting with journalists at a mini-secretariat in Gurugram after the filing of the nomination papers by the party’s Gurugram Lok Sabha candidate, Capt. Yadav.

He expressed the confidence that Capt. Yadav and the rest of the Congress candidates in Haryana will win.

He said the credit for making Gurugram the “Millennium City” went to the Congress. It had brought IT units and Industrial hub in the district. Seeking to know the contribution of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and local MP Rao Inderjit Singh to the development of the city, he said BJP transformed Gurugram from the Millennium city to world’s most polluted city.

Despite the people of Gurugram contributing the maximum to the State exchequer, the city lacked the basic facilities such as roads, health, education and power supply, he alleged.

Capt. Yadav said that the party had reposed faith in

him, and he would ensure that the Congress emerges as a winner. He claimed that he had the support of all the local Congress leaders and would emerge victorious in the election.

“BJP didn’t nothing in Gurugram. On the contrary, they transformed the district from the Millennium city to world’s most polluted city. We will make Gurugram a truly smart city. The city doesn’t have a good public university. Shifting of the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza is yet to be done.

The proposed AIIMS at Manethi in Rewari is only on papers. Meanwhile, Mewat doesn’t have a railway track. We will change that,” said Yadav.

District election officer and Gurugram deputy commissioner Amit Khatri said that the number of polling booths has increased from 1,113 in 2014 to 1,194 this time. There were around 20.4 lakh voters in Gurugram last year. After January 31, the names of around 60,000 new voters have been added to the electoral roll, bringing up the total to around 21 lakh. The constituency had 18.43 lakh voters in 2014.
