Environment minister Mohammed Akbar on Thursday assured the assembly that the government would conduct a probe into the allegation of encroachment of irrigation canals in Naya Raipur.
The assurance came after Congress MLA Dhanendra Sahu raised the issue through a call attention motion in the monsoon session of Chhattisgarh assembly.
Dhanendra Sahu pointed out that Atal Nagar Development Authority (ANDA), Nava Raipur after giving shape to city had acquired the irrigation canals. Through these canals, the water was being supplied to the acquired villages under NRDA for filling the ponds and irrigation purposes. But now these canals were being filled up through illegal encroachment by land mafia and NRDA, thus blocking the flow of water.
Minister Mohammed Akbar in his reply initially claimed that no such encroachment had taken place. But Sahu insisted that the villagers were not allowed to draw waters from them and the ponds were not getting water from the canals. He pointed out that these canals could be maintained and repaired as they could become helpful in future to keep the flow of water in the new capital city. He sought a probe into the encroachment on which minister agreed and said stern action would be taken against those involved, if found guilty.
