The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday removed Amethi’s District Magistrate Prashant Sharma, a day after he was seen in a video clip misbehaving with the cousin of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s son who was killed two days back.
The government spokesman said that Prashant Sharma had been put on waiting list and Moradabad Development Authority Vice-Chairman Arun Kumar had been posted as the new District Magistrate of Amethi.
The decision to remove Prashant Sharma from Amethi was taken following public outcry after a video clip that went viral showed him almost dragging the cousin of BJP senior leader Shivnayak Singh’s slain son Vijay Kumar Singh alias Sonu Singh. When the people standing there protested, the District Magistrate is seen reprimanding them.
Union Minister and Lok Sabha member from Amethi Smriti Irani had tweeted tagging the District Magistrate, “We should be modest and sensitive, this should be our effort. We are public servants, not rulers”
Sonu Singh, who owned a brick kiln, was killed by armed assailants on Tuesday night. On the demands of the family, Sharma had visited the post-mortem house on Wednesday, where the body of Sonu Singh (35), was brought.
When Sunil Singh, the cousin of the deceased, complained that a Dial 100 police jeep was in the vicinity but it failed to react in time, the District Magistrate is seen almost dragging him, holding his shirt and asking him if he can make out if anyone in the crowd has a gun.
Later in the day, the cousin of the deceased gave a statement through video saying the District Magistrate had not misbehaved with him.
Sonu Singh was shot dead in Bisundaspur village under Gauriganj Kotwali police station on Tuesday night. His family has named five persons from Gauriganj, all of whom have a criminal record, for their alleged involvement in the murder.
