Assembly stalled over violence against women

On the first day of its Winter Session on Wednesday, the State Assembly witnessed frequent adjournments as Opposition members kept demanding a discussion on the issue of violence against women in the State.

As the Question Hour began after Obituary References, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro called Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Dr Arun Kumar Sahoo to give a reply to a question of BJD member Mousadhi Bag. But Congress Legislature Party Leader Narasingha Mishra soon urged the Speaker to suspend the House and allow a discussion on the issue of “violence against women”.

As the Speaker refused to suspend the Question Hour saying there is a procedure for suspension of Question Hour and all members should follow it, Congress members rushed to the Well of the House shouted slogans like “nari nirjyatana chaliba nahin” (Violence against women will not be tolerated)  and attempted to climb the podium.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Pradipta Kumar Naik and other members of his party BJP stood at their seats, demanding discussion on the Adjournment Motion on “suspicious death of Jajpur district’s Haridashpur PEO Smitarani Biswal.

Unable to run the House, the Speaker adjourned the House at 11.18 am till 3 pm.

During afternoon hours, the Speaker called for an all-party meeting to resolve the issue on the advice of Opposition members. However, it didn’t yield any result. The House was adjourned twice till 5.57 pm when a Supplementary Budget of Rs 8,126.32 crore was presented. Thereafter, the Speaker adjourned the House till Thursday.
