Samajwadi Party MLA and son of Rampur MP Mohammad Azam Khan, Abdullah Azam, was arrested by police on Wednesday for obstructing officials during probe into a stolen books case.
Earlier on Tuesday, the police had raided Azam Khan’s private university, Jauhar University, and recovered 2,000 books stolen from Raza Library and Madarasa Aliya.
Abdullah was taken into police custody from Mohammad Ali Jauhar University premises in Rampur in the presence of senior police officials.
The search for books continued on Wednesday and as the police reached the university, Abdullah reportedly tried to obstruct the officials an conducting the investigation.
Superintendent of Police of Rampur, Ajay Pal Sharma, said, “MLA Abdullah Azam was trying to hinder the search operation of the police after which he was taken into custody. Till now, around 2,500 (stolen) books have been recovered.”
The Rampur police also lodged an FIR against Abdullah Azam for forgery in the date of birth mentioned in his passport.
The Rampur police were probing a case registered last month related to the theft of several books from ancient Madarasa Aliya in Rampur.
The recovered books were ancient and valuable .
Terming the probe as ‘vendetta’, Abdullah said that it was not an investigation and the state government was trying to finish an educational institution.
The SP MLA claimed that the police did not have a search warrant and everything was being done at the behest of the government.
