Bhati gang member held for firing at transgender

A 24-year-old cab driver alleged to be a member of “Sunder Bhati gang” was arrested by the Delhi Police on Tuesday for allegedly firing at a transgender in Hazrat Nizamuddin area of southeast Delhi.

The weapon used in the commission of crime has also been recovered by the Police.

The accused has been identified as Sagar resident of Shashi Garden, Trilokpuri. According to Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South-east district, on the intervening night of January19-20, a Police Control Room (PCR) call was received regarding transgender being shot at near Barapulla flyover following which a team rushed to the spot but no one was found on spot.

“On enquiry it came to light that injured was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center by some passerby. The injured was unfit for statement.

A case was registered at HAzrat Nizamuddin police station and investigation was taken up,” said the DCP.

“During investigation, specific inputs were received that members of the interstate Sunder Bhati Gang armed with fire arms who were involved in the above firing incident would come in a Honda Amaze Car from Barapula Flyover and would go towards MoolChand Hospital to commit crime following which a trap was laid and the accused was apprehended with two pistols and three live cartridges,” said the DCP.

“During sustained interrogation, accused Sagar disclosed on the intervening night of January 19-20, he along with his associate Chandra Kant gave lift to a transgender who they thought is a girl from the area of Trilok Puri and took the transgender near to Barapula Flyover.

When they reached near Barapula, they tried to sexually assault transgender. On refusal, accused Sagar whipped out a pistol and shot at transgender in the abdomen. They threw the transgender out of the car near Barapula and fled,” said the DCP

“He drives taxi in city. He had joined Sunder Bhati Gang and started committing armed robberies and extortion with them. He procured two sophisticated pistols of 0.32 caliber from Murad Nagar, Uttar Pradesh and used to keep them for committing robberies as well as for safety from his enemies,” said the DCP.

“The investigation of the case is in progress and his involvement in other cases is being explored.

Efforts are on to nab the co-accused Chandra Kant, who is absconding after the incident,” the DCP added.
