BHEL moving ahead on path of innovation

Thursday, 17 October 2019 | RADHIKA NAGRATH | Haridwar

With the growing demand of power sector, the requirement of indigenously made turbines is bound to grow. The rising hue and cry over increasing carbon emissions in the atmosphere, has given a boost to the demand for eco-friendly technology boosting efforts towards innovations in the domain of turbines, state the experts.

Being one of the major players in the field of power generation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Haridwar has many firsts attached to it ever since 1967 when it was dedicated to the country. The Maharatna company is now making the world’s first eco-friendly turbine which would be used in Sipat station of National Thermal Power Corporation in Chhattisgarh. Talking to The Pioneer, the executive director of BHEL, Haridwar unit, Sanjay Gulati said, “This is a feat not only for BHEL but for the entire nation as it is for the first time that any country would develop a turbine based on advanced ultra super critical technology. In this project, the efficiency of turbine would increase by about four to five per cent and the biggest advantage is that the coal consumption will be reduced. Hence, it is a green technology initiative. The research work has been undertaken by many developed countries but we are going to launch within a set timeframe.”

Reducing carbon foot-print is a major challenge faced by countries, towards meeting which the AUSC turbine is an important step undertaken by BHEL.

To generate steam from the turbine, lot of coal is used but using this AUSC, consumption of coal would be less in this 800 MW capacity turbine.

Notably, the present executive director of BHEL Haridwar has played a major role in taking the sub-critical technology to super critical and now advanced ultra super critical technology. Gulati had joined BHEL Haridwar in 1983 as an engineer trainee in marketing but then opted for turbine operations.

All these years he worked in establishing and consolidating technology for turbines.

In the field of renewable resources, the company is planning to enhance its capacity in solar energy too to add to its present 5 MW capacity. Gulati shared that his success formula was building a goal oriented team apart from hard work, dedication and honesty.“I always have been easily accessible to my juniors and gave my team members freedom to take decisions.

Encouraging youngsters for filing more patents and copyrights, implementing 5S system and encouraging women workers gave overall good results.”

Haridwar has been known for Ganga and BHEL and this itself speaks of BHEL’s role in the progress of the country.
