Biogas plant to take shape before Kumbh Mela

Tuesday, 27 August 2019 | PNS | Haridwar

A biogas and manure plant is expected to take shape in the near future in the holy city of Haridwar. Plans are afoot to make this plant which will convert the solid waste into biogas and manure. The officials of Municipal Corporation of Haridwar and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) recently held a meeting in state guest house to work out plans for this biogas plant. The Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik has stated that effort should be made to make this plant operational before the Maha Kumbh Mela of 2021.

Solid waste management is a major problem of the city which this plant can take care of, feel the officials. If everything goes as planned, soon the city will get some respite from the solid waste which shall be converted into fuel and residue into manure. From the green waste, bio gas can be formed and high quality manure generated from remaining residue through this methanation plant. The officials of IOCL alternative energy cell and Municipal Corporation of Haridwar, held a meeting in the state guest house presided by the State’s Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik. During the meeting, Madan Kaushik said that to bring the Swachchh Bharat mission into reality, cent per cent disposal of solid waste was necessary.  With the collaboration of IOCL, biogas plant will be established in Haridwar and under this programme the Shivaliknagar municipal council area and SIIDCUL area will also be included.

The AGM of IOCL alternative energy cell, Vijay Kumar said, “The Municipal corporation must give us evaluation of biodegradable and non- biodegradable waste, segregation of both green and plastic waste and earmarking of the land for this plant.” The official said that in Varanasi, the company had established three plants but as per the capacity of the plants they were not getting the segregated waste to utilise the capacity optimally. To avoid such a scenario in Haridwar they wished to plan out before starting the groundwork, said Vijay Kumar. The Municipal commissioner Udayveer Rana said that 260 metric tonnes of solid waste was being generated every day in the city and the assessment shall be made from Shivaliknagar municipal council area and SIIDCUL as well. After the proposal is sent by the municipal corporation, an MoU will be signed at the state level, he said.

Notably, solid waste disposal plant by KRL company was also proposed but has been pending for some time now. About Rs nine lakh has been provided for this while the detailed project report states Rs 19.30 crore as the sum needed to complete the project. Even door to door collection of garbage has not been streamlined properly, say the observers.
